For what it's worth, though, I enjoyed the latter half of the narrative. Game stories don't necessarily have to have Bioshock or Nier: Automata levels of clever plot twists, but Forspoken too often fails to have fun with its premise. It's a pedestrian premise, one that never goes anywhere particularly exciting. Along with her talking bracelet companion Cuff, she navigates the world of Athia and the Break which threatens to consume the land and everyone in it. It does play into some isekai tropes, with protagonist Frey Holland whisked away from her New York home and plonked into a fantastical world. An open world RPG with superpowers, mystical creatures, and a terrifying world-ending threat. In many ways, it's the exact type of game you've seen countless times across the last 15 years. So yeah, sorry to burst your bubble, but a 68/100 Metacritic score feels too high for this game.Yet, Forspoken is let down by its sheer unwillingness to break the mould. The only thing I can recommend is the music, which is quite dramatic and lovely and really wasted on such a lackluster release. It’s not fun, it’s not engaging, it looks terrible. I would have to change the language or play it muted I think.Īfter less than half an hour, my mind was good and made up. The game tries to be funny (I think?) but fails miserably. Truly awful writing, bad line delivery (though this is likely more about the writing than the actors) and it’s pretty constant.
Speaking of annoying, the dialogue between the main protagonist and her magic bracelet is about as cringey as anything I’ve encountered in a video game in the last decade.
I was bored after the third group of mooks. You should feel it when you tear through enemies, but it’s floaty and unsatisfying. This should be a game with constant crunchy hits landing. Meanwhile, you almost never feel like you actually connect when you hit enemies. You have all these powers but just selecting them is a chore. Hell, if I didn’t know what this was and just saw some video I might peg it as a PS3 game, and not even one of the better-looking ones. For a game with such demanding specs that’s only releasing on PC and PS5, the graphics are shockingly last-gen. The open-world is bland and boring and it looks ugly.
